Pikeville Mayor Jimmy Carter Releases Statement Following Flooding

Official Statement from Pikeville Mayor Jimmy Carter:
February 16, 2025

The City of Pikeville has experienced significant and devastating flooding since yesterday afternoon, resulting in widespread impacts to our community. Since 3:00 PM on February 15th, the Pikeville Fire Department has responded heroically, participating in over 50 swift water rescue operations and answering more than 130 emergency calls. In addition to rescues within city limits, our firefighters also responded to mutual aid calls throughout Pike County, assisting other emergency agencies in bringing people to safety. Their dedication and professionalism in the face of this crisis have undoubtedly saved lives, and we owe them our deepest gratitude.

Flooding along the Levisa Fork has affected numerous neighborhoods, including nearly every home in the Lake View subdivision near Pikeville Commons. Several homes along the road in front of Pikeville High School have also suffered flood damage. Our emergency response teams continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety of our residents and assess the full extent of the damage.

“I am beyond proud, amazed, and truly humbled by the unwavering dedication of the Pikeville Fire Department,” said Mayor Jimmy Carter. “I watched them work for hours and hours through the night, rescuing families, braving dangerous waters, and never once hesitating. Some of these rescues extended beyond our city as they answered calls for help across the county. Their courage and selflessness are nothing short of extraordinary, and our community is forever grateful.”

The City of Pikeville is committed to supporting those affected and will coordinate with local, state, and federal agencies to provide resources and recovery assistance. We urge all residents to remain vigilant, avoid floodwaters, and follow guidance from emergency personnel.

Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this disaster, and we will stand together as a community to recover and rebuild. If you are in need of immediate assistance, please contact local emergency services.
