A man from Pike County is facing charges after Kentucky State police reported he shot another man in the foot after an altercation.

Troopers say James Dougherty shot the victim around midnight Sunday in Stopover, several hours after the two men reportedly argued on the road earlier in the day.

When they arrested him. Troopers say Dougherty had a pistol, which he was prohibited from having because of an earlier felony conviction.

He is charged with gun possession and first-degree assault, and is in the Big Sandy Regional Jail.

Court records show Dougherty pleaded guilty in 2022 to charges that he pistol-whipped a woman and fired a gun inside her home, with a 14-year-old boy inside at the time. Dougherty was given a 5-year suspended sentence.
