Repairs to begin in early November
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 12 advises the public that KY 581 near Tutor Key (mile point 5.5) will be closed to all traffic beginning Wednesday, Oct. 15, out of an abundance of caution following repeated theft of safety equipment from the active work zone.
Temporary signals had been installed at the site to maintain one-lane traffic while crews prepared for repairs to a roadway break. However, multiple and continual theft incidents rendered the signals inoperable, creating unsafe conditions for motorists. As a result, the Cabinet has removed the signals and will close the roadway completely until permanent repair work begins.
The contractor has adjusted their schedule to begin repairs the first week of November, weather permitting. The project is expected to take approximately four weeks to complete once work begins.
Detour Information:
During the closure, motorists can use:
- KY 993 on the south side of the closure, and
- KY 3224 on the north side of the closure
to access U.S. 23 and reconnect with KY 581.
Barricades and Road Closed signage will be in place for the duration of the closure.
KYTC appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as the Cabinet works to restore the roadway safely and efficiently. Updates will be shared on KYTC District 12’s Facebook page as the project progresses.
