The Kentucky State Police Pikeville Post received a request for assistance from the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office on January 5, 2026, at approximately 12:20 p.m., regarding a structure fire in the Melvin community of Floyd County.
KSP investigators responded to the scene on Henpen Branch in the Melvin community. The preliminary investigation indicates that emergency personnel located two deceased individuals inside the residence. The bodies were transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy and identification.
The cause of the fire and the cause of death are under investigation.
The investigation is being conducted by Detective Matthew Smith. Detective Smith was assisted on scene by Kentucky State Police Post 9 personnel, Floyd County Sheriff’s Department, Southeast Volunteer Fire Department, and State Fire Marshal’s Office.
