The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s District 12 crews are actively preparing ahead of winter weather expected this weekend, with work underway across the seven counties served by the district.
Transportation crews throughout the state have been taking proactive steps to ensure roads remain as safe and passable as possible should winter conditions develop.
Preparations include:
Beginning today and continuing tomorrow, District 12 crews will start pre-treating bridges, overpasses and various routes using brine and other de-icing agents to help combat lower temperatures and reduce ice formation before precipitation arrives.
Motorists may notice a reddish-brown tint on some roadways during pretreatment operations. This is due to an additive mixed into the brine that helps the treatment adhere to the pavement and remain effective in lower temperatures. While the appearance may look different than traditional brine, the product is working as intended to improve roadway safety during winter weather events.
Motorists are encouraged to stay informed and plan ahead. Travelers should monitor weather conditions, follow all travel advisories issued, and adjust travel plans now.
