Two Floyd County Second-Graders Recognized for Heroic Actions in Choking Incident

South Floyd Elementary School is proud to recognize the bravery and quick thinking of two second-grade students, Keaton Johnson and Bennett Johnson, who recently came to the aid of a fellow student during a life-threatening situation. On Wednesday November 6th, the boys sprang into action when they noticed their classmate choking on a piece of hard candy, successfully performing the Heimlich maneuver and ultimately helping their friend.

The incident occurred during class when the boys saw their friend showing signs of choking. Acting swiftly, Keaton and Bennett performed the Heimlich maneuver. Their timely intervention allowed their classmate to expel the candy and breathe normally again.

South Floyd Elementary Principal Rady Martin praised the boys’ maturity and quick action. “Keaton and Bennett displayed incredible bravery and skill, especially for students so young,” said Martin. “Their actions not only helped their friend but also exemplified the spirit of caring and responsibility that we value here at South Floyd. We are extremely proud of them.”

Floyd County Schools Superintendent Larry Hammond expressed similar admiration for the young heroes. “Keaton and Bennett showed extraordinary composure and courage in a difficult situation,” said Hammond. “Their ability to apply what they’ve learned to save a life is nothing short of inspiring. They are true role models, and we couldn’t be prouder of their actions and compassion for others.”

South Floyd Elementary and Floyd County Schools will honor Keaton and Bennett Johnson for their actions at the next scheduled Board of Education meeting on November 25th, recognizing their heroic display of responsibility and skill. These young students exemplify the values of courage and community, and their actions will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact.
