London, Ky. (May 13, 2025) — The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) Division is committed to enhancing roadway safety by focusing on the enforcement of commercial vehicle regulations and driver education. One key component of this mission is routine commercial vehicle inspections. As part of this ongoing effort, KSP will participate in International Roadcheck, a high-volume, three-day inspection and enforcement initiative from May 13-15.
This effort, created by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), is the largest, targeted enforcement program for commercial motor vehicles globally. During this 72-hour period, nearly 15 trucks and motorcoaches are inspected every minute across North America on average. Since the program’s inception in 1988, more than 1.8 million roadside inspections have been conducted. Officer Steven Douglas, East Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Spokesperson, emphasizes the importance of this initiative.
“International Roadcheck is about more than enforcement, as its main focus is promoting safety,” said Ofc. Douglas. “By taking a proactive approach to inspections and education, we’re helping ensure Kentucky’s roadways are safer for everyone who travels them.”
Throughout the event, KSP CVE inspectors will conduct North American Standard Inspections on commercial motor vehicles and drivers. These inspections thoroughly examine vehicle components such as brake systems, lighting devices, steering mechanisms, tires and cargo securement. Passenger-carrying vehicles like motor coaches and vans will also be inspected for compliance with emergency exits, electrical systems and seating requirements.
During last year’s International Roadcheck, 48,761 inspections were conducted in the United States, Canada and Mexico. North America’s top vehicle out-of-service violation was for defective service brakes, accounting for 25% of total vehicle out-of-service violations.
Vehicles that successfully pass inspection should receive a CVSA decal. Vehicles with a CVSA decal are generally not re-inspected while the decal is valid. Instead, inspectors focus their efforts on vehicles without a valid CVSA decal.
In addition to checking vehicles, the annual event also serves as an educational opportunity, raising awareness among commercial vehicle operators and the general public about the importance of compliance with safety regulations. For more information about the CVE Division, visit KSP’s website.
