District-wide Paint Striping Begins this Week

Watch for slow moving caravan during daylight hours

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (June 6, 2025) A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) will begin District-wide paint striping this week.

Weather conditions and high traffic volumes can cause pavement striping to fade over time. This project aims to refresh faded markings and improve safety for motorists in all seven counties in District 12. Crews will begin work in Johnson County then move to Lawrence and Martin Counties. Crews will continue to move through the remaining counties of Floyd, Pike, Knott and finish up in Letcher.

The mobile paint caravan will be active during daylight hours, weather permitting, and will continue working in various counties in District 12 over the next several months.

While much of the striping will be along rural secondary highways, some may take place along four lane highways and higher traffic volume routes.

There will be no lane closures or flaggers, as the mobile crews will be continuously moving along the roadways.

The caravan will consist of a lead vehicle with sweeping capabilities, a striping truck, and support vehicles to warn motorists of the mobile work zone and possible wet paint ahead.

Use caution when approaching or passing these slow-moving caravans. Although traffic paint is designed to dry quickly, motorists should avoid driving over freshly painted lines. Drying time depends on humidity and wind conditions but typically takes about four minutes.
