Kentucky State Fair begins Thursday, WSIP will be there live

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WSIP) – The Kentucky State Fair is returning this week. The fair, which takes place at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, features pageants, vendors, live music, food, drinks health exhibits and more. This year, special exhibits and patriotic themed events will take place in honor of America's 250th birthday. The fair runs Thursday, August 20th through Sunday, August 30th. WSIP and WKLW will be broadcasting live from the "Fair On-the-Air" event on Thursday, starting at 7 a.m.

Repairs to KY-825 in Johnson County scheduled for August 20th

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ky. (WSIP) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 12 advises motorists of an upcoming temporary road closure on KY 825 in Johnson County for roadway repairs. Kentucky Power plans 26-mile transmission upgrade in Johnson, Lawrence Counties

LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ky. (WSIP) – Kentucky Power and Appalachian Power are planning upgrades to the electric transmission system in Lawrence and Johnson counties and Wayne County, West Virginia. The Big Sandy-Thelma Transmission Improvements Project would rebuild about 26 miles of 138-kilovolt transmission line between the Big Sandy and Thelma substations and improve the connection to the Busseyville Substation. Hal Rogers Parkway four-lane expansion project moving forward

HAZARD, Ky. (WSIP) - State and federal funding has been secured to begin design studies for a four-lane expansion of the Hal Rogers Parkway between London and Hazard. The project would widen nearly 60 miles of the highway, which currently includes both two and four-lane sections. The design phase is expected to cost more than $50 million. No construction timetable has been announced.

Martin County GED instructor accused of smuggling drugs into detention center

GREENUP COUNTY, Ky. (WSIP) – A Martin County GED instructor at the Greenup County Detention Center is facing felony charges after authorities say she smuggled drugs to inmates inside a Mother's Day card. Crystal Hazlett, 46, of Inez was arrested after security video showed Hazlett giving an inmate a pink card, which contained Suboxone strips. Hazlet is charged with first-degree promoting contraband and second-degree trafficking in a controlled substance.

Floyd County man found guilty of 2022 sexual abuse incident

FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSIP) – A Pike County jury has convicted a Floyd County man of first-degree sexual abuse stemming from a 2022 indictment. Scotty Hall, 49, of Teaberry, was found guilty Tuesday following a two-day trial in Pike Circuit Court. The indictment alleged Hall committed a sexual act in front of a child under 16. Pikeville City Commission continues to explore data center development

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WSIP) – The Pikeville City Commission continues to explore the possibilities of data center projects. This week, the commission approved an extension of its memorandum of understanding with MD Squared Power LLC regarding the development of a data center at the Kentucky Enterprise Industrial Park.
