Two Arrested in Fiber-Optic Cable Theft Case

Two men were arrested in Floyd County after deputies reported finding hundreds of feet of suspected stolen fiber-optic cable and multiple firearms during a traffic stop. Deputies stopped a vehicle on KY-194 in Endicott after receiving a theft complaint and noticing the car had no license plate. Ronald Johnson and Gary Matthew Burchett were both charged with first-degree criminal mischief and defacing a firearm. Johnson also faces several traffic-related charges. Both men were lodged in the Floyd County Detention Center.

Man Charged After Struggle with Magoffin Deputy in Salyersville

SALYERSVILLE, Ky. (WSIP) – A man is facing multiple charges after authorities say he fought with a Magoffin County deputy following reports he was attempting to break into homes and apartments in Salyersville. 52-year-old Timothy Lynn McKenzie allegedly became combative, charged at the deputy and fled on foot after a Taser deployment proved ineffective. Martin County Teen Charged with Felony Assault in Stabbing

MARTIN COUNTY, Ky. (WSIP) – A Martin County teenager has been charged with felony assault after deputies say a man was stabbed during a fight. 17-year-old Robert Brayden Moore was arrested after investigators determined he allegedly stabbed another man during an altercation. The victim was treated at Three Rivers Medical Center for injuries authorities say were consistent with a knife wound. Moore, who told deputies he had been drinking and could not remember the incident, was charged with second-degree assault.

Diversified Energy Eyes AI Data Center Project in Letcher County

JENKINS, Ky. (WSIP) – A local company has secured an option to purchase land in Letcher County to build artificial intelligence data centers. Diversified Energy is evaluating construction of a 100-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant to power a future AI data center at the Gateway Regional Business Park in Jenkins. Officials say no data center has committed to the site.

Wrong-Way Driver Killed in Fatal Pike County Crash

META, Ky. (WSIP) – Kentucky State Police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred Tuesday morning on U.S. 119 in Pike County. Troopers say a Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by Harley Dempsey was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes in the Meta community when it collided with a Chevrolet Traverse driven by Stony Blackburn. Dempsey was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.

Lawrence County Man Indicted on Fentanyl Trafficking Charges

LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ky. (WSIP) – A Lawrence County man has been arrested after a grand jury indicted him on fentanyl-related charges. Court records show 35-year-old Tommy Church was taken into custody July 9 on charges of engaging in organized crime and importing fentanyl into Kentucky. Prosecutors allege Church participated in an ongoing fentanyl trafficking operation between July and September of 2025. He is being held in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center on a $50,000 cash bond.

Floyd County Woman Missing Since June Located

FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSIP) – A Floyd County woman who had been reported missing since June has been located. Floyd County Sheriff John Hunt reports that Brandi Moore, 41, of McDowell, is expected to, “return home soon.” No other details about where she was found or what led to her being found were released.

Kentucky Flags Lowered to Honor Late U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham

Flags across Kentucky are flying at half-staff this week in honor of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, who died unexpectedly Saturday. The senator was remembered following his death, with officials recognizing his years of public service.  The lowered flags will remain at half-staff until 6 p.m. Saturday, July 18th. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear is encouraging residents, businesses and organizations across the commonwealth to join in the tribute.
