Hal Rogers Parkway four-lane expansion project moving forward

HAZARD, Ky. (WSIP) - State and federal funding has been secured to begin design studies for a four-lane expansion of the Hal Rogers Parkway between London and Hazard. The project would widen nearly 60 miles of the highway, which currently includes both two and four-lane sections. The design phase is expected to cost more than $50 million. No construction timetable has been announced.

Martin County GED instructor accused of smuggling drugs into detention center

GREENUP COUNTY, Ky. (WSIP) – A Martin County GED instructor at the Greenup County Detention Center is facing felony charges after authorities say she smuggled drugs to inmates inside a Mother's Day card. Crystal Hazlett, 46, of Inez was arrested after security video showed Hazlett giving an inmate a pink card, which contained Suboxone strips. Hazlet is charged with first-degree promoting contraband and second-degree trafficking in a controlled substance.

Floyd County man found guilty of 2022 sexual abuse incident

FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSIP) – A Pike County jury has convicted a Floyd County man of first-degree sexual abuse stemming from a 2022 indictment. Scotty Hall, 49, of Teaberry, was found guilty Tuesday following a two-day trial in Pike Circuit Court. The indictment alleged Hall committed a sexual act in front of a child under 16. Pikeville City Commission continues to explore data center development

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WSIP) – The Pikeville City Commission continues to explore the possibilities of data center projects. This week, the commission approved an extension of its memorandum of understanding with MD Squared Power LLC regarding the development of a data center at the Kentucky Enterprise Industrial Park. PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WSIP) – A fugitive from Boyle County was arrested Tuesday after allegedly fleeing from a Floyd County Sheriff's deputy in Prestonsburg. 63-year-old Johnny Ray McQueen is accused of driving away from a traffic stop, damaging property and traveling the wrong way on South Front Street at a high rate of speed. Thousands remain without power throughout eastern Kentucky following severe storms

KENTUCKY (WSIP) – Utility customers across eastern Kentucky are still dealing with widespread outages this afternoon. Tuesday's storms left thousands without power, while downing trees and causing widespread damage. Over 11,600 utility customers are without service this afternoon in Carter, Floyd, Johnson, Knott, Lawrence, Letcher, Magoffin, Martin, Perry and Pike counties, with most of those outages in Knott, Letcher and Perry counties. Johnson County Schools move forward with proposed property tax increase

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ky. (WSIP) - The Johnson County Board of Education is moving forward with a proposed property tax increase. The board unanimously approved raising the district’s tax rate by seven-tenths of a cent, from 61 cents to 61-point-7 cents per 100 dollars of assessed property value during a special meeting Monday evening. Kentucky Blood Center facing low supply, donors needed

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WSIP) – Operators of the Kentucky Blood Center are reporting a critical blood supply shortage. The organization says hospital needs are not being fully met due to limited donations and increased need. Transfusions at local hospitals are up 40% over the last week while donation numbers continue to underperform. KBC is in low supply of several blood types, including O+, O- and A-.
